Lesson pages

Eighteen guided steps through The Science of Being Well.

Each lesson pairs the assigned reading with chapter audio, review questions, one practical action, and a journal prompt.

Lesson 1

Introduction to the Practical Path

Preface

This course is a practical guide and handbook, not a philosophical treatise, intended for those who want health. It teaches the use of the universal Principle of Life in a simple fashion so that anyone may follow it to perfect health. To succeed, you must give your whole mind to this specific way of thinking and living, avoiding the mistake of practicing parts of conflicting systems.

Open Lesson
Lesson 2

The Internal Principle of Health

Chapter 1

Health is the result of the natural action of the Principle of Life, a "One Living Substance" that permeates the universe. Every person has an internal Principle of Health (source) which, when constructively active, causes all functions to be perfectly performed. All healing, regardless of the system used—allopathy, homeopathy, or faith healing—is actually performed by this internal Principle. It is brought into activity by thinking in a Certain Way.

Open Lesson
Lesson 3

The Foundations of Faith

Chapter 2

You must believe that health is the natural state of humanity and the purpose of nature. In the Original Substance, there are only thoughts of perfect motion and function; God never thinks of disease. Disease is a product of individual thought and racial subconscious impressions. To be well, you must learn to think only thoughts of perfect health so the Power of Life can assist you.

Open Lesson
Lesson 4

Life and Its Organisms

Chapter 3

Life is an energy that produces and renews the body, not a product of it. To trigger the Principle of Health, you must sever all mental relations with disease and mentally unify yourself with health. This requires faith and personal application. You must claim health by faith and cease to think of yourself in connection with sickness.

Open Lesson
Lesson 5

Constructing the Conception of Health

Chapter 4

Form a Conception of Health, which is an understanding of perfect functioning in every organ. Picture yourself doing things in the "Strong Way," walking with a vigorous stride and working with surplus vigor. Ignore physiology and hygiene that focus on disease, as these fill the mind with thoughts of imperfect conditions. Instead, call up thoughts in harmony with your Conception of Health to rebuild your body cell by cell.

Open Lesson
Lesson 6

The Power of Faith and Gratitude

Chapter 5

Only thoughts conceived in faith have the creative energy to change physical function. You must assert with faith that you are well now, not that you are going to get well. Gratitude is the greatest aid in applying faith; it relates your mind closely to the Supreme Intelligence and strengthens your own belief.

Open Lesson
Lesson 7

Mastering the Will

Chapter 6

The will should not be used to compel the body or the external world, but to direct your own mind. Use your will to determine what you give your attention to and what you think about. When suggestions of disease arise, use your will to fall back on gratitude and connect with the Supreme. You have nothing to overcome but your own habit of thinking about disease.

Open Lesson
Lesson 8

Receiving Health from the Supreme

Chapter 7

By harmonizing with the Supreme Intelligence, you receive wisdom and vital energy. Wisdom allows you to perceive truth and act rightly in all matters of life. To be in harmony, your purpose must be to live most abundantly in body, mind, and soul, without excess in any one area.

Open Lesson
Lesson 9

Reviewing the Mental Actions

Chapter 8

To practice the science, you must: Believe in the One Thinking Substance. Purpose to live fully on every plane of being. Form a conception of yourself in perfect health. Hold no thoughts that conflict with this conception. Act only in a healthy manner.

Open Lesson
Lesson 10

The Law of When to Eat

Chapter 9

The sub-conscious mind signals the need for food through earned hunger. Never eat until you have an earned hunger, which is a pleasant anticipatory desire for food, not a gnawing or faint feeling. The "no-breakfast" plan is recommended for everyone because hunger is earned by work, not by sleep.

Open Lesson
Lesson 11

Choosing What to Eat

Chapter 10

Eat what Nature provides in your zone, as these foods are freshest and filled with the life force required for your climate. Seek out vital food from healthy plants and animals raised in harmony with nature. Trust the Principle of Health to guide your taste to what your body requires once you stop eating for appetite.

Open Lesson
Lesson 12

The Method of How to Eat

Chapter 11

You must chew every mouthful to a liquid to allow the Principle of Health to extract vital force. Focus entirely on the taste of the food with cheerful confidence, dismissing all business or domestic worries. If you make the act of eating successful by doing it perfectly, digestion and assimilation must also be successful.

Open Lesson
Lesson 13

Governing Hunger and Appetite

Chapter 12

Stop eating the instant you feel your hunger abating. Anything eaten after this point is "mere debauchery" taken to gratify appetite, not hunger. For fluids, drink only when thirsty and stop as soon as thirst begins to abate.

Open Lesson
Lesson 14

Practical Application Summary

Chapter 13

The essence of the science is to form a conception of health and perform every voluntary act (eating, drinking, breathing, sleeping) in a perfectly healthy way. If you cannot master yourself in the simple matter of eating, you cannot hope to master yourself in anything worthwhile.

Open Lesson
Lesson 15

The Vital Function of Breathing

Chapter 14

Keep your spine straight and chest flexible so that deep breathing happens naturally. Whenever you think of it, "straighten up," fill your lungs to capacity, and consciously breathe in life. Avoid bad air and poisonous gases; seek the living atmosphere.

Open Lesson
Lesson 16

Recharging through Sleep

Chapter 15

Vital power is renewed in sleep. Ensure an unlimited supply of fresh air by ventilating your room thoroughly—ideally, it should feel like sleeping outdoors. Go to sleep with a confident faith that your strength is being renewed and offer a bedtime prayer of thanksgiving.

Open Lesson
Lesson 17

Supplementary Instructions for Daily Life

Chapter 16

Guard your speech: Never complain or catalog symptoms; speak only in harmony with perfect health. Handle Pain: Do not resist pain; recognize it as a healing effort by the Principle of Health and mentally cooperate with it. Exercise: Engage in movement for fun or recreation, not as a forced "health stunt". Social Interactions: Avoid "doctor books" and people who talk about sickness.

Open Lesson
Lesson 18

Final Summary of the Science

Chapter 17

Health is the result of thinking and acting in a Certain Way. By forming a healthy conception of yourself and performing voluntary functions (eating, drinking, breathing, sleeping) perfectly, you cause the internal Principle of Health to become constructively active. Every person can attain perfect health by following these principles.

Open Lesson
Practice rhythm

Use the work in ordinary life.

Wattles' wellness teaching is not meant to remain abstract. Let each listening session end in one simple practice.

One daily Being Well practice

  • Listen to one chapter or work through ten flashcards.
  • Write one sentence beginning, "The thought of health I am practicing today is..."
  • Choose one physical action that supports poise: breathe deeply, eat attentively, rest, stretch, drink water, or slow down.
  • Use gratitude to shift attention away from fear and toward constructive activity.
  • Close the day by naming one place where the thought of health became more natural.
